Deer in snow by Qwiven Deer in snow by Qwiven
I've been trying to draw larger, more complete pictures on the holidays. This is the best one so far.
This image was referenced from a picture by Robert Bateman.
I don't mind this. I've started using those rolled up peices of paper for smudging and I LOVE them, they are awesome!!
The snow was very hard to get on the deer, I still think it looks a bit odd, but or well.
So, not much to say. I've been recently branching out from my 'can only draw dragons' rut, but not much of that stuff is good enough to upload. I'm happier with my art though, because I feel like I am getting a bit more diverse.

I would LOVE critique and advice about how to do better!!

(I had to edit this slightly in photoshop because I belatedly realized there was a tiny bug on the doesn't affect it though, it was just on the misty bit so I haven't altered it from the original or anything)

Not sure what critique to give you since I love this piece so much (and my skills are very limited). Please continue to branch out from dragons and challenge your skills ^.^

Quite lovely shading on this one. I like the soft atmosphere, as well as the softness of the deer's (elk's?) face. The definition of the thicker fur along the back is done very well! The snow collected on the antlers just adds to it all :aww:
Great job!
The only critique I would even mention is the background. The trees are well done, and I think the snow should stay contrastingly white/clean as is, but maybe push the shading along the snow's edge to show "distance" in the atmosphere. The snow and BG are about the same shade. However, I would not want this to take away from the fading effect you've done with the trees. I hope that makes sense! :)

Thanks, I'm not sure whether it's a deer on an elk, but I think in the work I referenced it off by Robert Bateman it said I'm going to go with that lol
I know what you mean! I should try that out. I'd try it out on this one, but I don't like going back to I must try and shade some snow again. Thanks for the advice =D

You're welcome ^^

Wow, I envy you being able to submit a completed piece like this and it's non-dragon to boot! 8D

For the snow I would have shaded that too, because even though it catches a lot of light, if you reference even a snow ball there's a bit of shadow there too.

Thanks, in getting out of my dragon-rut I've been trying to draw horses, among other things. However this has oddly transferred across, so now I think the dragons I draw look more horse-like.
And now I am learning to draw scenary the next dragon I draw will either look like a tree or a mountain! lol

In the book I referenced this from Robert Bateman wrote some interesting stuff about the snow. He said that he'd originally made the tracks of the deer darker, assuming they'd be darkened by shadow. He said this looked tacky, so he went outside and made some deer like tracks, and the overturned snow was actually whiter! So he altered his picture.
That'd be an awesome epipheny moment :)

I've noticed that with my own work. Drawing lions have made the vrolera look my lion like and proportioned. c8 I enjoy it.

That sounds fascinating, I've never noticed anything like that before. *Waits for the snowstorm forcasted* I was referring to the snow on the deer's back since it looked like natural coloring, but it looks fine regardless.

Until one day, we compare our dragons and realise mine have become horses and yours have become lions XD

Ah, whoops ^^; I knew that.
But it is really interesting...I'd try it myself but we don't get snow here.

HAHA that would be a riot.

You: HURR? (hurrian idk)

You must find a place that snows! It's fun to frolic in it!
